The start of the year a lot of time is spent talking about rules and communities. In math we spent a lot of time doing exploration of math manipulatives. I always had a hard time with the "exploring". One activity you could do to incorporate exploring math manipulatives and communities is have the students build a building or skyscraper. Give each student a ruler and tell them max height the building can be and then let them create their building with the math manipulatives they are exploring.
